Bagalkot: All eyes in Bilagi town are on this chain-snatcher. They are waiting to get the chain back. But the chainsnatcher, a four-legged one, is not obliging them. On Friday, a cow swallowed a 15-gram gold chain, sending the village into a tizzy. The chain reaction began thus. Girija, wife of the priest of Rameshwar temple Shankar Dixit, performs pooja to Goddess Lakshmi every Friday. This time too she put a garland and her chain round the idol’s neck. After pooja, she went to a neighbour’s house to distribute the prasada.

Seizing the opportunity, the stray black cow ambled into Girija’s house, took away the garland and the chain from the deity and swallowed them. Girija who was witness to this raised an alarm.
Neighbours who gathered in huge numbers suggested that she tether the cow in her compound. Girija did likewise. The veterinary doctors suggested that the family wait a few days and search the dung for the chain. But to the family’s dismay, the cow did not heed their prayers …the dung was there all right, but no chain.
Now, Girija’s house has turned into a picnic spot with villagers gathering at Girija’s house every day waiting for the cow to do the needful. It is five days since the cow ate the chain. The bullion dollar question: will the cow oblige them?
